【What is gout】

Gout is an arthritis caused by persistent asymptomatic hyperuricemia (excess uric acid in the blood). Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is common, and serum uric acid concentrations greater than 10 mg/dL may cause gout symptoms. 4

Uric acid is a breakdown product of purine, a substance found naturally in body tissues (purine is released when cells die) and in many foods.
When uric acid levels are too high, uric acid crystallizes into needle-like urate salts and precipitates in joints or surrounding tissues, causing inflammation and gout, causing severe pain.

According to a publication 3 published by the Department of Health in 2019, gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in Western developed countries. It is estimated that about 3% to 6% of men and 1% to 2% of women suffer from gout.
In Hong Kong, the prevalence of gout has continued to increase over the past decade. In 2016, the crude prevalence rate of gout was 2.9%, which is similar to the rate in developed Western countries.
